Situated between San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas, Texas's
capital city of Austin possesses a character all its own. While
it possesses much of the western feel of Texas's other large
cities, Austin has made its own mark on Texas culture and
tradition.
Austin has been nicknamed the "Live Music Capital of the U.S."
and visitors to this politically-charged city are treated to more
than 150 venues featuring all genres of musical performance, from
blues to classical. You might find yourself in a small club
enjoying local jazz or in one of the city's larger venues which
attract top-name entertainment. Head to the Warehouse District
and along Sixth Street for the best selection of venues.
Austin is, however, a lot more than just great music. This
central Texas city is rich in history as well and is also home to
the University of Texas and the 50,000 students who attend the
college, making it a sort of "college town" as well.
The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum is a great place to
start your Austin sightseeing. This three-story museum tells the
story of Texas through excellent exhibits, artifacts, and
memorabilia. There's also an IMAX theater here, special effects
shows, and unique programs for children.
Families will enjoy a visit to the George Washington Carver
Museum and Cultural Center, where you can learn about this famous
African-American scientist and other great African-Americans who
had an impact of central Texas.
If you're into art, the Mexic-Arte Museum is a showcase of
traditional and modern-day Mexican and Latin American art and
culture. The unique Elisabeth Ney Museum is dedicated to the
works of this talented German-born sculptress who was a colorful
figure in Austin history.
There are also many outdoor activities for visitors to enjoy when
visiting Austin, Texas. Take a cruise on Town Lake via riverboat
or other watercraft. Travel to nearby McKinney Falls State Park
for some camping, hiking, mountain biking, road biking,
picnicking, and fishing.
The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is also a delightful
outdoor attraction and the ideal location for a leisurely stroll,
some photo-taking opportunities, and hiking on the Center's
nature trails.
Austin is also rich in performing arts. Hear a concert by the
Austin Symphony, enjoy performances by the Austin Lyric Opera,
treat yourself to a wonderful presentation by Ballet Austin or
the Ariel Dance Theater, or enjoy Broadway in Austin.
The athletics department at the University of Texas provides
visitors with a chance to enjoy spectator sports such as baseball,
basketball, cross country, football, soccer, track and field,
volleyball, swimming, and softball. Austin also boasts a number
of minor league sports teams for spectator sports enthusiasts.
