St. Louis Travel
Once considered the gateway to the western United States, St.
Louis was the city through which many pioneers passed on their
way to discover riches on a journey to what must have seemed like
the other side of the world.
St. Louis also served as a stop for steamboats that traveled the
Mississippi River and today, you'll still find these paddle-wheelers
making their way through the city, carrying hundreds of
passengers, leisurely float down this mighty river.
This city's premiere landmark is one that's been photographed
time and time again. The Gateway Arch, visible from many parts of
the city, is one of the city's most-visited tourist attractions.
This shiny Eero Saarinen-built structure is the tallest monument
in the U.S., reaching 630 feet in the air. It is, however, more
than just a sculpture. Guests can also ride a tram to the top for
an incredible view of the city and the Mississippi River.
While you're at the Arch, make a stop at the accompanying Museum
of Westward Expansion. Located below the Gateway Arch, this
expansive museum provides visitors with a great overview of the
pioneering spirit of the courageous Americans who forged the way
westward. The museum has an excellent exhibit on Lewis and Clerk
and their Corps of Discovery.
St. Louis boasts a large number of free attractions, which makes
it the ideal city for families or those on a budget. Check out
the St. Louis Zoo, considered one of the best in the country.
There are about 6,000 animals living here and many are endangered
or rare. This zoo has built some fascinating habitats that allow
visitors to view the animals in their natural settings.
The St. Louis Art Museum, which specializes in Oceanic, pre-Columbian,
Chinese bronzes, and 20th century German paintings is also free,
as is the excellent Missouri History Museum, where visitors can
experience the fascinating history of this Midwestern state. At
least a dozen additional museums and landmarks are also free to
the general public.
For a fun excursion, take a tour of the Anheuser-Busch Brewery,
located in downtown St. Louis. Learn how this company has been
producing some of America's most-popular beer for more than 150
years at their 100-acre production facility.
On the arts scene, St. Louis is known as the birthplace of the
Blues and it's still one of the best places to experience this
music in its purist form. Check out the clubs that specialize in
this unique genre of music.
Gaming enthusiasts come to St. Louis for its riverboat gambling.
The city is home to five floating or riverfront casinos that
offer state-of-the-art gaming for visitors who enjoy slots,
tables, video poker, and more.
For sports-lovers, St. Louis is home to three professional sports
teams, lots of golf courses, and an international raceway.
