Travel Tips
We've all heard stories of nightmarish vacations. Cars
breaking down, cancelled flights, hotels that didn't live up to
your expectations. Many things can happen to ruin your vacation,
but often, a little proper planning can go a long way.
Before you even head for the airport or point your car in the
direction of your chosen destination, there's much you can do to
get your vacation off to a successful start and be sure that it
stays that way through the duration of your trip.
Begin by researching your destination. This can be advantageous
for a number of reasons. If, for example, you're traveling to a
foreign country, you'll need to be sure you have the proper
travel documents, you may want to research the currency exchange
rate, or you can even read up on little details, such as whether
your hairdryer is compatible with the electrical current found at
your destination.
Regardless of where you're heading, you can plan your itinerary
from the convenience of your own home. Most major cities and
other popular tourist destinations, such as National Parks, have
websites that are chock full of information to help you plan your
days, select a hotel, or find the best restaurants.
When it's finally time to leave for your vacation, you'll no
doubt be excited and will certainly want to pack properly. The
mistake that most travelers make is in over-packing for their
excursion. Unless you're going to a remote area where stores are
few and far between, chances are that if you forget something,
you'll be able to pick it up somewhere, so don't overcompensate.
If you've taken time to research your destination ahead of time,
you'll be better prepared to pack, taking into consideration
factors such as day and evening temperatures or whether you'll be
dining at five-star restaurants or casual eateries. If you're
traveling on a plane, keep your carry-on bags as light as
possible but remember to include a few essentials, like
medication or contact lenses, in case your luggage gets lost.
Airports can be frustrating these days but keep in mind that the
increased security is for your safety. Always have your photo ID
ready and be prepared to remove laptops from their cases and open
your cameras if necessary. Take your shoes off and put them on
the x-ray belt and don't be offended if you're asked to step
aside to be searched. Your cooperation makes everyone's travel
easier.
These days, very few people carry wads of cash along on their
vacations. Decades ago, traveler's checks came into fashion and
if you lost them or they were stolen, you could have them
replaced as long as you possessed the correct documentation.
While many tourists still use traveler's checks, company's like
American Express offer Traveler's Cheque Cards, which are easier
to handle and contain a pre-determined amount of spending money.
Debit cards are also invaluable when traveling and credit cards
get you the best exchange rate at ATM machines in foreign
countries.
Planning is certainly the key to successful travel, so think
ahead, even if you're enjoying a last minute weekend fling, so
that the unexpected is less likely to occur, ensuring that your
vacation will be everything you dreamed it could be.
